a bookshelf

I have been thinking about making a bookshelf for this project. Actually its purpose will be primarily function over form.(I just need one quite badly). Initially I was thinking of different shapes of shelving units to divide and create space for books. The whole figure which is tilted will be used to divide and create space within the room. One of my alternative principles is to break down the boundaries of a rectangular room. A side of the bookshelf will consist of cut-out patterns, so I will be able to see the book covers as well. Design wise, I tried to make it simple as I am going to build one after the assessment.

360degree

After having a chat with a tutor from spatial design, I just tried to look at things from different point of view. First drawing is looking at an watercolour tube from different angles, then I was thinking of making a book of book which is 3 dimension when it's folded, but 2 dimension when it's opened, kind of.(not very convincing) It was quite interesting for me, but also hard.
drawing of an watercolour tube, not really convincing drawing.

miscellaneous

I found a book shows series of photography of old water tower and winding towers etc. They are very interesting shapes, and I tried to draw what interests me.

some drawings to understand her works.

To understand Zaha Hadid works, I drew her models(especially adorable paper relieves) then I kinda figured out what she tried to achieve. Breaking spaces with her great views, pushing the limit of conventional spatial topology. Sometimes I feel like my hand has better brain than one in my head.(?)

Research: ZAHA HADID - models

Cardiff Bay Opera House 1994-1996
Unbuilt
"Hadid's design created a street line, ranging ancillary spaces on the edge of the site, with the auditorium at the centre of a public space."

Moonsoon Restaurant, Sapporo, Japan 1989-1990

Research: ZAHA HADID - paintings

"Hadid belonged to a generation familiar with the idea of architecture as a speculative, theoretical activity in which design drawings were as important as building."

The World(98degrees),1983

The Peak, Hong Kong, 1982-1983
"London was in the depths of recession when Hadid arrived as a student in the 1970's. Its architects were experiencing both a shortage of work and a loss of confidence. The Architectural Association, where Hadid studied from 1972 to 1977, provided a unique centre for debate about new directions in design, and gave her the opportunity to explore one of the twentieth century's great art movments, Russian Constructivism. This period was the point of departure for her breakthrough project, the winning design for The Peak- an apartment complex and club overlooking Hong Kong. Although never built, the extraordinarily dynamic paintings that she used to convey the essence of the design commanded worldwide attention and continue to shape Hadid's thinking today."

Victoria City Areal, Berlin, Germany 1988

Blue Beam
"in the claustrophobic context of Berlin before the wall came down, this project created a high density urban environment, civilised by generous public spaces."

Hafenstrasse Office and Residential Development, Hamburg, Germany, 1989

"Hamburg's waterfront would have been transformed by the insertion of the dynamic forms of the Hafenstrasse mixed-use project into the context of the existing buildings."

Mapping04

I wanted to think different way(not too different though). I was thinking reason could be the first thing we can read on the left, then it connects to the body parts where Tim's got scars & disease. Leave some space opened to imagine his whole body marks. (Target Audience : Tim's potential girlfriends)

Mapping03

Just playing around with body marks and reasons. On the top one, tried to connect with locations but it looks just too busy(again). It's getting harder thinking of how to order things as I can't make decisions on priorities. Time and place might be less interesting for me, but in a way it's showing his background. I'm still not sure whether it's important or not.

Mapping02

I tried to put all elements-marks on the body, time, place and reasons. But presenting in this way is not quite working, too busy. Tim wants him to look sexy on the map, haha.

mapping locations and Tim's marks of honors.
I want to show relationship between marks on his body and geographical spots.

Tim's history of body

1983, Gosport : Purpura (unknown reason)
1986, Gosport : Scar (falling off to the swimming pool)
1989, Gosport : Scarlet Fever (camping next to the cow field)
Scar-broken toe (jumping off stairs at home)
1991, Gosport : Scar (running on his friend's head on the beach)
1996-1998, Gosport and Bristol : Perforated eardrum
(1. kicked under the water by a stranger who jumped on
to the swimming pool.
2. happened again.
3. punched by his girlfriend at that time.)
2000, Bristol : Scar (jumping underneath the door-frame)
Broken Finger (punching his friend)
2004, Bristol : Scar (from operation)
Scar (from operation)

London : Scar (falling off stairs pushed by his friend.)

* Lots of times and everywhere : tonsillitis

Mapping01

Marks based on Tim's medical research.
As I'm still in early stage of mapping, I only marked what he drew on the body shape.
He had stories to tell on most of his scars and disease which I found it quite funny. I want to go further to tell his stories, adding time facts, or locations(where he got scars).
